Türkiye 2023

We travelled to Türkiye in November to participate in a global conference of 50Hz. power plant owners and operators, with attendees from 23 countries. We spent our time in the beautiful, historic city of Bursa, on the opposite side of the Sea of Marmara from Istanbul.  It was the first capital of the Ottoman Empire in 1326 but does not get many international tourists — which was a good thing at that time of unsettling events not far away. We went two weeks without seeing another American.

Maybe need to get a selfie-stick……..

We spent the first part of our visit working with friends from many countries. Click on any image below to view a slideshow of full-size images.

And then we spent some quality time exploring the history and culture of Bursa, which had been an important city in the Greek Empire, the Roman Empire and the Byzantine Empire before it became the first capital of the Ottoman Empire. It was on the ancient Silk Road from China across Central Asia to Europe, and already by the mid-6th century Bursa was known as a famous silk textile manufacturing center. Click on any image below to view a slideshow of full-size images.

Cornwall and John’s Ancestors 2023

In July we met Kathy and Roy and spent 6 days hiking on the Cornish Coastal Path, which runs all the way around the edges of Cornwall, hugging the cliffs and inlets of the coast. Lots of up and down hiking, but the scenery and the hospitality were outstanding. This was our kind of hiking, active during the day traversing between 5-star hotels and inns with local Backroads “Active Adventure” guides. Cornwall is also very significant to John and Kathy since it is the origin of Rosevear and Williams ancestors on their grandmother’s side, who came to the US in the mid-19th century.

After the organized hiking adventure, which had touched on some of the areas where John and Kathy’s ancestors originated, we stayed a few more days to explore in more detail. We found evidence of our ancestors going back 6 generations to the 18th Century.

Naples, Sicily and Malta 2023

We took our second cruise on the historic sailing ship Sea Cloud with Roger and Peg in May. She is a four-mast hand-sailed barque that was built by Marjorie Merriwether Post and EF Hutton as their private yacht in the 1930’s. Our first cruise on her was in the Caribbean in 2018. This time we sailed from Naples, Italy around Sicily to Malta and back through the Aolian Islands in the Mediterranean.

The stops in Sicily included Palermo, Erice, Marsala, Syracuse, Taormina and Messina. The Aolian Islands in the Tyrrhenian Sea included Lipari and Stromboli. Most impressive was the island of Malta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where the Great Siege of Malta took place in 1565 when Ottoman Turkish Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent tried to take the island from the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem (an order of Crusaders also known as the Knights of Malta). That was our first exposure to the history of the Ottoman Empire, which expanded greatly when we visited Türkiye later in 2023.

Nearby Adventures

Not all of our travel was to far-away destinations this year. There are many interesting places within an easy day’s drive from home, and we sampled a few in 2023.

There is always the world-famous Bethune Beach Boardwalk.

And there is Hogsmeade just on the other side of Orlando.

We visited Savannah, Georgia in February with Roger and Peg.

And to close out the travel year with Roger and Peg we visited St. Augustine, Florida, the oldest continuously inhabited European-established settlement in what is now the contiguous United States, for the famous Christmas Boat Parade.

Lowes, Hiking and Day-Drinking in Charlottesville

Danielle moved across the country to Charlottesville this year and moved into her new house in late November. We spent a couple of days there at Thanksgiving and came back for 10 days at Christmas. She got a running account at Lowes, which we made liberal use of for a range of projects.

Since we were there for 10 days at Christmas, though, it was necessary to entertain us with more than new home projects. She asked the locals what they recommended for activities. The first thing they asked was whether her parents drank. After she replied in the affirmative, they said “Oh, good, otherwise I wouldn’t know what to recommend.” Seems that Charlottesville has over 40 wineries, and dozens of breweries, cideries and meaderies. Thomas Jefferson takes the blame, for trying to establish a wine business able to compete with France a couple of hundred years ago. The Monticello Wine Trail is the thing now.

London, England, UK 2022

We visited London twice this year related to a Users’ Conference, once for organization/venue scouting and once for conducting the Conference.

London was a great place to try to create memories for a bunch of engineers. Our group had a private event in the Engine Room of the Tower Bridge. That huge reciprocating steam engine was built in 1889 and produced a massive power output of 360 horsepower, which was a lot at the time, used to raise the bascule bridge. John got on a ladder to take this picture and Paula was not happy about that.

We also had a private event at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, often called the “birthplace of time”. Here we are on the Prime Meridian of the World at 0 degrees longitude. We had a real photographer to take this one.

Wyoming 2022

We went on another organized hiking expedition in August, this time in the US to the Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks in Wyoming. We flew from sea level to Jackson, Wyoming to have a couple of days to adapt to the altitude (6000 feet plus) before the hiking began. We then went to Yellowstone and stayed at two of the classic old lodges: Old Faithful Inn and Yellowstone Lake Hotel. Our outfitter said these hotels were “basic” and warned us not to expect 5-star accommodations from these vintage hotels, but they were both great. We could actually see the Old Faithful geyser erupting from the window in our hotel room! While in Yellowstone we hiked the Upper Geyser Basin, the rim of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, and the trail to Storm Point on Lake Yellowstone.

We then moved to Grand Teton National Park, where we hiked the Two Ocean Lake Trail into Jackson Lake Lodge – another vintage lodge where we stayed the night. It is known for its floor to ceiling window views of the Grand Teton mountains in the dining room. It hosted the Federal Reserve’s Jackson Hole Symposium the week after we were there. The first day we hiked up the valley above Jenny Lake, the Jewel of the Tetons. The second day we hiked around Phelps Lake in the Rockefeller Preserve. The third day we had a scenic float trip down the Snake River.

Bears are a big deal in both of these parks, and each couple had to carry a belt-mounted can of bear spray for defensive purposes. But we only saw one bear and didn’t use the bear spray.

Scotland 2022

We went on an organized hiking trip to the Scottish Highlands in July. This was our first hiking since John’s 2021 accident, and it was a bit more challenging than the brochure advertised, but we both survived. Interestingly, they have signs in Scotland to warn about folks of our vintage.

We flew into Inverness, regarded as the capital of the Highlands, touring and tasting “whisky” (they are insulted if you call it Scotch) for a couple of days with Roger and Peg before meeting our hiking group at the train station. We even stumbled upon the local festival of the Highland Games in a park along the River Ness.

We hiked from Torridon on a trail up between Liathach and the famous Beinn Eighe, a massive ben (mountain), where we discovered a dramatic landscape of soaring pinnacles, cliffs and corries – valleys formed by glacial erosion. The next day we hiked out & back to a historic Bothy (old stone buildings where hikers stay overnight) and proceeded to Portree on the Isle of Skye. On the Isle of Skye we hiked the dramatic ridgeline at Trotternish through steep hillsides and past craggy peaks before climbing up and along the pinnacles and cliffs of the Quiraing, which we discovered in bar encounters later is a pretty famous hiking place. There we were met with stunning, but misty views of the sea and coastal landscape. After that, things tamed down a bit with hikes to the picturesque village of Plockton, Duncraig Castle and Cawdor Castle (connected in literature to Shakespeare’s Macbeth).

Boston 2022

We made three trips to Boston this year. One was for John’s long-delayed MIT Class of 1970 50th reunion, that finally took place in-person in year 52. The other two were for weddings of Paula’s nieces and nephews.

At the MIT Reunion in May, the events were largely outdoors for safety, in tents for each class. We spent time with Jesse, Bonnie, Willie and Marti. We got to visit “Strobe Alley” where John learned from Doc Edgerton (inventor of the strobe light). And John got to wear his cardinal and grey reunion outfit and participate in the esteemed “march of the geezers” in the “Great Court” as part of the graduation ceremony of the Class of 2022.

The nieces and nephews are continuing to marry. This year Dan and Katherine got married in Rockport in September, and Brianna and Jonathan got married in Boston in October. After the wedding in October, we went with Steve and Lucy to Ted and Mary’s new house in Newport, Rhode Island for a couple of days until Ian beckoned us back to Florida to put up hurricane shutters.

Dominican Republic 2022

Our first trip in over 2 years that required a passport was to the Dominican Republic in May. It was also the first time we went to an all-inclusive destination, at the Club Med Miches Playa Esmeralda on the north coast of the island. Kind of like a cruise ship on land, and in this case with mostly French-speaking passengers. It was great and we might do it again!
