Turtles! 2017

In September, Leon and Julian stayed a couple days with us at the beach.  John and Leon went out to walk the beach each morning to see what changed.  The first day, we saw tracks where a sea turtle had come ashore to lay her eggs.  The Turtle Patrol had just been there to mark the nest.  The second day we saw something very special.  The Turtle Patrol was digging up a nest that had been destroyed by a coyote, and they were surprised to discover some undisturbed eggs and a bunch of baby turtles who had hatched but had not emerged from the nest.  While Leon kept watch to make sure no seagulls were approaching, the volunteers released the baby turtles and guided them to the surf.  We hope they grow up and come back to lay eggs on our beach.

Galapagos Islands, Ecuador, March 2016

2016 was a pretty good year for us.  We traveled quite a bit (UK, Ecuador, Japan, Boston, Utah, DC) and tried to spend more time at the Beach.  We coordinated Conferences in York, England and two in Tysons Corner, Virginia.  And John’s consulting business kept him busier than average as well.

Best Wishes to you all in 2017.

John and Paula

Hiking the Wasatch Mountains 2016

In early November we went with Roger and Peg to Park City, Utah to experience some mountain life.  It was unseasonably warm, and good for hiking and sightseeing.  While there we also visited the US Winter Olympics Training Center, the Great Salt Lake and Temple Square in Salt Lake City.  On one hike, Paula Face-Timed with Ben to show him his first moose.

Japan 2016

John visited Japan four times in 2016 to provide consulting services.  While there he stayed in the beautiful Minatomirai harbor area of Yokohama, traveled to Takasago several times and had a great evening with friends Etsunori, Mitsuru and Akiko.

England’s Industrial Revolution 2016

We had spent a couple of weeks in York, England in May talking about the latest high temperature gas turbine technology.  In June, we returned to England for two more weeks for an organized tour of England’s role in the Industrial Revolution in the 18th-19th Centuries.  John found all of the machinery, bridges, ships, factories, etc. fascinating.  Paula was a good sport.  After the tour, we visited Paula’s relatives in Bristol.
